A stainless steel "penetration test" can refer to a liquid penetrant test (LPT) to find surface defects or a cone penetrometer test to measure the strength and moisture content of soil using a stainless steel cone. In materials science, LPT is a non-destructive test to find flaws open to the surface. For soil analysis, the cone penetrometer test determines the liquid limit by measuring the depth a stainless steel cone penetrates the soil at different moisture contents.
Liquid penetrant testing (LPT)
Purpose:
A non-destructive method to detect surface cracks, porosity, or other flaws in stainless steel.
Process:
A liquid penetrant is applied to the surface, then removed. A developer is applied, which draws the trapped penetrant out of any defects, making them visible.
Application:
Commonly used for stainless steel welds, flanges, and other components where surface integrity is critical.
Result:
The presence of colored indications on the surface shows where defects exist.
